Working hard to update the website with our equine digestion animation. I will be adding a project we did for Purina Mills that took you on a ride from the mouth the the….well. This was an incredible project to work on and a very interesting subject and application. The final animation was used as a teaching and demonstration tool for their various feed products. Please check back later in the gallery section, where I will go into greater detail and provide more renders and animations of the final product.

For 12 years I have been doing 3D modeling as part of my day to day job. I’ve had the opportunity to model characters for video game as well as numerous technical objects for the architectural, engineering and medical fields.

As a digital 3D artist we must translate our inspiration and designs  into the computer. In the early days they used the keyboard and mathematically entered points in space. If we remember from geometry class that it takes three points in space to create a shape or as we call it a polygon, we then have the basic building blocks of computer graphics.

Today we have very sophisticated GUI application that can draw shapes in a much more fluid process. As computer graphics evolve the process of drawing in digital space is opening up new and exciting possibilities.  Incredibly complex models take hours instead of weeks and the process and tools used to draw them are expanding to more organic methods.

Here’s a quick lesson. The process of 3D modeling falls within three distinct categories.

Polygonal modeling makes up the majority of 3D modeled surfaces. Three points called vertices are plotted out and surfaced with what we call a polygon. A poly-mesh is then formed by attaching the polygons together. Much like the pixel is the make-up of a 2D digital image. Polygons are the underlying structure of a 3D digital image. Did you fall asleep!

Curve modeling or Nurbs modeling is a cage of B-Splines that you can move to adjust the tangent.  You might associate this with product design or automotive modeling where you require the curves to be precise and have specific tolerances.

Digital sculpting is like taking a ball of clay and allowing the artist to manipulate the model in a very intuitive and direct way. Pushing and pulling at surfaces as opposed to meticulously selecting and moving vertices.

Recently, Ive had the opportunity to use this method on one of our projects and was blown away by the sheer amount of detail that could be modeled.

The specific software I am talking about is Z-Brush and its a great example of the innovations happening in 3D modeling.
